Description
This report explores strategies to revitalize and sustain Pekin’s historic Fourth of July Festival—the oldest consecutive celebration of its kind in the United States. Developed by Indiana University students through the Sustaining Hoosier Communities initiative, the document emphasizes community engagement, economic sustainability, and cultural preservation. Key recommendations include forming a Youth Advisory Board to involve local students in planning and social media outreach, introducing a “Taste of Southern Indiana” component featuring local food, beverages, and entertainment, and creating new traditions such as art contests, annual t-shirt design competitions, and a bicentennial time capsule project. These proposals aim to enhance festival attendance, foster intergenerational pride, and ensure the longevity of this cornerstone event in Washington County.
