Glenn A. Black Laboratory archaeologists Patrick K. O'Brien and Mary E. Pirkl visited a 31 acre parcel of the Ohio River floodplain on May 5, 1998 and marked a line defined by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that divides areas of the property that may be used to store aggregate from those areas that must be avoided or subjected to further archaeological investigation. To demarcate the area of avoidance, we used an electronic total station to relocate six trenches. The area to be avoided is uniformly marked with individual lath flagged in red and or white. If your intention is to construct a fence along the line defined by the COE, we suggest that you do so relatively soon because our lath markers may not stand up to extensive weathering. In addition to marking the avoidance boundary, we also marked the location of Deadman Trench #4 near the river bank. This trench is marked with two, crossed lath flagged in red. This location was marked to allow B&B Barge to build a pier in previously disturbed ground to support a proposed conveyor.en
