A COMPARISON AND ANALYSIS OF THE PEDAGOGICAL TRUMPET LITERATURE OF PETER BOND, AND MARK GOULD

Abstract

Peter Bond and Mark Gould were trumpet players in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and have had successful careers as teachers and performers. This document compares the content of Peter Bond’s The Singing Trumpet: Using Singing and Speech as Literal Models for Trumpet Performance and Mark Gould’s Gould on Music: Playing, Studying, Teaching, and Preparing for the Future. This analysis relies on the vast body of available trumpet methodologies and other pedagogical texts to determine which aspects presented in their books are new in trumpet pedagogy and which ideas are likely to have been borrowed with alterations from the standard canon of books used in teaching trumpet players. Additionally, standard texts used in teaching vocal techniques will be used to determine the veracity of singing and speech as literal models for trumpet performance. This analysis will highlight how there are many ways to learn how to play the trumpet and emphasize the need for teachers to find a way to teach each student based on the students’ needs.
