Abstract
In 2003 legislators approved a plan for I-Light2, an expanded fiber optic network for the State of Indiana. On March 9, 2004 researchers gathered at the IUPUI Conference Center in Indianapolis to discuss how the original I-Light network, launched in December 2001, had impacted their work and to explore with their colleagues from institutions throughout the state the opportunities of- fered by the expanded network.
This was the second time that groups from throughout Indiana came together to discuss the uses and impact of the unique I-Light high-speed fiber optic network. The original network connects Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Purdue Uni- versity West Lafayette with each other and with Abilene, the national high-speed Internet2 research and education network. I-Light2 will make this connectivity available to other universities, colleges, libraries, and related institutions around the state.
The Symposium brought together researchers from across the State of Indiana. Presentations and poster sessions filled the day, and special insights into the future were provided by the keynote and capstone speakers: Miron Livny, University of Wisconsin, and Donna Cox, National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Livny’s discussion of high–throughput computing and Cox’s exam- ples of her internationally–acclaimed work in scientific visualization contributed significantly to the creative energy of the Symposium.
Building on the foundation provided by I-Light and the increased linkages available through I-Light2, Indiana can rightly claim to be at the crossroads of the Internet.
