Abstract
Indiana governor (1909-1913) and vice president of the United States (1913-1921), Thomas Riley Marshall achieved a small measure of immortality with his quip, "What This Country Needs Is a Really Good Five-Cent Cigar." He never claimed the comment as his own, but its application to a senate (that "cave of winds") speech gave it lively currency.
