Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Location for a New Building, Crane NSWC, Martin County, Indiana

Abstract

At the request of the Department of the Navy, Crane Division Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) (NAVSEA), the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University (GBL) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed location for a new building and its associated road cut on the grounds of the Crane NSWC, Martin County, Indiana. Fieldwork was conducted on February 14, 2001 by GBL archaeologist Mary E. Pirkl. Due to poor surface visibility at the site, shovel test probes were conducted at intervals of 10m. Shovel probe excavation consisted of the removal of approximately one cubic foot of soil down to the base of plowzone or to subsoil, whichever was appropriate and the soil was carefully examined by hand. No cultural material or evidence of buried cultural material was found during the survey. It is highly unlikely the proposed building and road cut will have a negative impact on cultural resources in project area. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the project area, provided all earth-moving activities stay within the delineated project area boundaries.
