Abstract
This Chinese version of the Student Alcohol Questionnaire (SAQ) includes alcohol and drinking questions considered relevant to the Chinese culture by the first author's department at Guangxi Medical University, Nanning, PRC. It contains questions concerning the frequency of drinking, types of beverages and quantity consumed, and behavior problems resulting from alcohol consumption adapted from Engs’ SAQ. It also contains the complete 50 item Health Concern Questionnaire and a few attitudes toward alcohol questions.
Some items were modified to make them more appropriate to the Chinese culture. For example, "driving a car" was changed to "riding a motor bike or bike."

Description
Items for the Chinese instrument were grouped into four categories. The first contained 7 questions about drinking patterns; the second consisted of 5 items assessing attitudes toward drinking and perceived attitudes of significant others toward the respondent's alcohol consumption; the third category consisted of 7 items related to drinking behaviors. The final element of the questionnaire was Engs’ 50 item Health Concern Questionnaire. Questions for the Chinese instrument were selected from the 1987 version of the (SAQ) located in IUScholarWorks repository http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17206 Three items were adapted from David J. Hanson’s attitude scale and are found in the 1981 version of the SAQ in the repository at: http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17208. The reliability of the 19 alcohol behavior and attitudes section items on this questionnaire revealed a Spearman-Brown reliability coefficient of .98, Chronbach's alpha of .90, and Gutman's split-half coefficient of .55. The reliability coefficients of individual items ranged from .2 to .9 for the 19 questions behavior questions. A total Health Concern score was compiled by summing the degree of concern expressed on a 4 point Likert scale for each item. The reliability coefficient for both the Spearman-Brown and Guttman's Split half technique for the Health Concern scale were .92.
A limitation of the questionnaire is that some questions may not have had the same or exactly equivalent meaning in Guangxi province. All questionnaires developed by Engs are found on the repository at: https://scholarworks.iu.edu/dspace/handle/2022/17141/browse?type=dateissued
