Description

This report explores strategies to strengthen outreach and engagement for Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. Conducted by Indiana University MSCH-R 348 Public Relations Planning and Research students, the study combines qualitative interviews with Habitat homeowners and quantitative surveys of Orange County residents to assess perceptions, motivations, and communication preferences. Findings reveal strong community support for Habitat’s mission, persistent misconceptions about “free homes,” and a need for improved outreach. Recommendations include expanding social media presence beyond Facebook, increasing visibility at community events, offering homeowner maintenance classes, and leveraging partnerships with local businesses and churches to boost funding and volunteer recruitment. This project was completed as a collaboration between the students in MSCH-R 348 Public Relations Planning and Research and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County as part of the 2018–19 Indiana University Sustaining Hoosier Communities (IUSHC) initiative. IUSHC is a program within the IU Center for Rural Engagement (CRE). This report represents original student work and recommendations proposed by the students and does not reflect the views of IUSHC, CRE, Indiana University, or Habitat for Humanity of Orange County.
