Abstract
At the request of James Architects, Indianapolis, Indiana, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology (GBL) performed a cultural resources survey of the proposed location for improvements associated with the construction of the Madison State Veteran's Cemetery on the grounds of the Madison State Hospital, Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. The proposed improvements include widening and alteration of the intersection of State Road 7 and the existing north entry to the hospital, improvements at the intersection of the north and east entry roads, and construction of a dam to address overflow from the cemetery. The project area was divided into two segments for convenience. A total of 12 acres was surveyed in both areas. The purposes of the survey were to 1) identify and document the cultural resources in the proposed project area, 2) assess their potential for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) make recommendations for the avoidance or preservation of significant or potentially significant cultural resources in the project area. Fieldwork was done on January 23, 1998 by GBL archaeologists Patrick K. O'Brien, Wendy L. Natt, Tamara Hoogerdyk, and Mary E. Pirkl. No cultural materials were found. The GBL concludes that construction of the proposed improvements will most likely not impact significant cultural resources. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for construction of the proposed improvements.
