Abstract
This presentation delivers a foundational overview of United States and international copyright law as the opening session of an eight-week course. Structured around a critical lens that asks what is protected, who benefits, who is excluded, and what assumptions the legal system makes, the session establishes the U.S. constitutional foundation (Art. I, Sec. 8, Cl. 8) and statutory requirements under 17 U.S.C. § 102, emphasizing that copyright protection requires independent creation fixed in a tangible medium with a minimal creative spark. It touches on the following topics:
-Difference between copyright, trademarks, patents
-Licensing
-Foundational US Cases
-Geographic Factors
