Abstract
Description
This report provides a strategic analysis of HandUp OC, a nonprofit organization in Paoli, Indiana, dedicated to addressing poverty, fostering community engagement, and reducing substance abuse. Developed by Indiana University O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs students, the report outlines seven recommendations across four focus areas: capacity building, stakeholder engagement, program evaluation, and building considerations. Key proposals include refining the mission statement, adopting bylaws, diversifying board membership, expanding stakeholder networks, and implementing surveys to assess community needs. The report also evaluates the feasibility of acquiring a historic church building, ultimately advising against acquisition due to financial and operational constraints.
This report reflects original student research and recommendations from Indiana University O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs in collaboration with HandUp OC, Inc. as part of the 2018–19 Sustaining Hoosier Communities initiative. The views expressed are those of the students and do not represent Indiana University, the Center for Rural Engagement, or HandUp OC, Inc.
