Abstract
At the request of Hoosier Energy REC, Inc., the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Office of Cultural Resource Management, Indiana University (GBL-OCRM) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological survey of the impact area of the proposed Kellerville 69/12.47KV substation and 69KV tapline in Dubois County, Indiana. The project corridor surveyed is located north of Jasper, Indiana. A total of approximately 47 acres were surveyed. The purposes of the survey were to: (1) identify and document all cultural resources in the project area, (2) evaluate any sites found for eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and (3) make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. This survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act (as amended). Fieldwork was conducted from 30 June 2003 through 14 July 2003, by GBL-OCRM archaeologists Eldridge Doubleday, Bryan Will, Robert Adkins, Holly Hilton, Michael Darland, Lauren Matisoff, Kris Suthers, Stephanie Kazmierzak, and Amy Ribick. Five previously unrecorded archaeological sites were documented during the survey. Site 12DU749 is a prehistoric site containing a single flake. Site 12DU750 contains a single flake and 2 pieces of glass. The remaining three sites, 12DU751-753, contain only historic artifacts. None of the sites identified contain subsurface features or structures. Due to the sites’ low frequency of artifacts, in addition to the lack of subsurface deposits and structures, it is the opinion of the GBL-OCRM that none of the sites recorded during this survey are eligible for the NRHP or IRHSS. No further archaeological investigation is recommended. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the proposed project area provided that all earth-moving activities are restricted to the currently delineated project area boundaries.
