Abstract
At the request of the Crane Golf Association (CGA), the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Office of Cultural Resource Management, Indiana University (GBL-OCRM) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed location of improvements on the golf course at NSA Crane, Martin County, Indiana. The Crane Golf Association proposes to join two small ponds. The area of proposed effect (APE) staked by the CGA delineates the area that will be disturbed due to this improvement. The APE is approximately 4.0 acres in size. The purposes of the survey were 1) to identify and document all of the cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate any sites found with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. Fieldwork was conducted November 8, 2004 by GBL archaeologists George Mankowski, Eldridge Doubleday, Robert Adkins, and David Buren. A total of ninety-six shovel probes were excavated within the APE. No cultural materials were recovered. Based upon the results of Phase Ia archaeological reconnaissance-level survey, it is the opinion of the GBL-OCRM that it is unlikely that significant cultural resources exist within the project area, and that no further archaeological work is required. Cultural resource clearance is therefore recommended for the proposed improvements to the golf course, provided that all earth-moving activities are restricted to the currently defined APE boundaries.
