Abstract
At the request of Howard J. Barth & Associates, Inc., the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology (GBL) performed a cultural resources survey for the proposed replacement of Bridge # 100, the realignment of Snow Hill and Johnson Fork Roads, and the construction of a new bridge over Johnson Fork Whitewater, north of Rockdale, Franklin County, Indiana. Approximately 12.5 acres were surveyed. The purposes of the survey were 1) to identify and document all of the cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate any cultural materials found with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS) and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. Fieldwork was conducted September 24, 1998 by GBL archaeologists Mary E. Pirkl and Wendy L. Natt. No cultural materials were discovered. Two extant bridges, Franklin County Bridge #100 (12 Fr 272) and Franklin County Bridge#l02 (12 Fr 273) were informally documented during survey. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the replacement of Bridge# 100 and realignment of Snow Hill and Johnson Fork Roads. The issue of cultural resource clearance for Bridge # 102 is somewhat irrelevant because it will not be physically impacted by the realignment project. Bridge #102 is a covered bridge already listed on the NRHP and IRHSS.
