Sedimentology of the Coal Creek Fan, Fountain County, Indiana

Abstract

An outwash deposit of early Woodfordian age occurs along the east wall of the Wabash Valley at the mouth of Coal Creek in Fountain County, Ind. The outwash fan prograded southward from the Batestown ice margin across the mouth of Coal Creek. Coarse clastic material was deposited as longitudinal bars, transverse bars, and lateral accretionary wedges in a braided-stream environment. Vertical persistence of facies boundaries suggests that aggradation of the fan surface was rapid. After fan deposition ceased, the upper part of the fan was reworked by flow down Coal Creek. Channels were cut and filled with thin sequences of gravelly sediments, and the sequence was capped with fining-upward channel and over-banked deposits of a meandering river."
