Phase Ia Archaeological Survey for Proposed Westside Sanitary Sewer Project, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana

Abstract

At the request of Bynum Fanyo Environmental, Inc., the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University (GBL) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed location for the Westside Sanitary Sewer Project in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. The project consists of three distinct areas separated by land use or property boundaries: the corridor on the Monroe County Board of Aviation Property; the corridor containing the agricultural/open field (Alma Carmichael and Public Investment Corporation properties); and the Westmont Housing Development. Approximately 8.94 acres were surveyed. The purposes of survey were 1) to identify and document all of the cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate any sites found with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. Fieldwork was conducted August 29, September 7, and September 18, 2001 by GBL archaeologists George Mankowski, Daniel Seib, Krista Jordan, Johnie Sanders, Jessica White, and Jamie Aprile. No cultural resources were discovered within the proposed project area. Cultural resource clearance is therefore recommended for the proposed sewer project location provided that all earth-moving activities are restricted to the currently defined project area boundaries.
