dc.descriptionDr. Bethany C. Bray is Associate Director for Scientific and Infrastructure Development at the Institute for Health Research and Policy (IHRP) at The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), a home and incubator of research spanning the social, behavioral, and health sciences. IHRP works to advance health, overall well-being, and quality of life. Dr. Bray’s research focuses on developing and applying advanced statistical methods to questions about the longitudinal development of alcohol and other drug use, with a special emphasis on its relation to the development of comorbid problem behaviors like gambling and risky sexual behavior.
dc.description.abstractLatent class analysis (LCA) is an intuitive and rigorous tool for uncovering hidden subgroups in a population. It can be viewed as a special kind of structural equation modeling in which the latent variables are categorical rather than continuous. This seminar will provide an introduction to LCA, which uses categorical items, as well as latent profile analysis (LPA), which uses continuous items. It is designed to get you thinking about how these approaches could be used in your own work to address new, innovative research questions.
