Abstract
At the request of Hudson Excavating of Solsberry, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University (GBL), performed a cultural resources survey of a proposed borrow pit associated with INDOT contract B-23652, east of Belmont, Brown County, Indiana. Per information provided by Hudson Excavating, the borrow pit will impact a 250' x 225' area in a fallow agricultural field south of State Route 46. The purposes of the survey were 1) to identify and document all of the cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate those resources with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. Fieldwork was conducted on May 22, 1998. At that time, the GBL surveyed a 100 m (N-S) x 70 m (E-W) area that had been flagged by Hudson Excavating. Total coverage was 1.73 acres. No cultural resources were discovered and clearance is recommended for the proposed borrow pit.
