Abstract

Despite the level of growth in the racial and ethnic diversity of the college student population, there remains a severe lack of diversity among college faculty of color. Studies show that a number of factors impede diversification among college faculty including: racial climate on college and university campuses (de la Luz Reyes & Halcon, 1996; Horton, 2000); a lack of respect given to scholarly work regarding minority populations (Turner, Myers, & Creswell, 1999); and disproportionate service loads (Antonio, 2002; Turner & Myers, 2000). Until institutions make additional strides to create a diverse professoriate reflective of the increasing diversity among its students, the recruitment and retention of faculty of color will remain a paramount issue in the study of higher education.
