Integrating Data Management Literacies with Data Visualization Instruction: A One-Shot Workshop

Abstract

This poster and related handouts outline the efforts of the Indiana University Science Data Management Librarian and Scientific Data Curation Assistant to develop a drop-in data management and visualization workshop in partnership with the Indiana University Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center. The workshop is aimed at graduate student researchers but open to all. The authors identified data management and visualization as an appropriate pairing in order to help attendees to get a more holistic overview of the possibilities for their data and to highlight the importance of having well-managed data for data visualization. Sample data sets are used to demonstrate general data management practices necessary for those who plan to use data visualization as part of their research methodologies. Specifically, we focus on the core competencies required to steward data, agnostic of discipline or native format, that will be visualized. The sample data sets will be visualized using tools such as the Science of Science (Sci2) Tool and Gephi. The authors map the core competencies for data information literacy outlined in "Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study of Students and Research Faculty" (2011) with the workshop learning outcomes. Workshop planning considerations, content, and problems faced will all be included on the poster. While this poster describes a workshop being developed at Indiana University, the authors hope this model will prove informative for other institutions looking to create similar workshops pairing data management and visualization.
