Abstract
At the request of ATC Associates, Inc. (ATC), the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University (GBL) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed location for a cellular communications tower northwest of the city of Hatfield, Spencer County, Indiana. The cellular tower site ( approximately 50m x 50m) will consist of a central tower structure with three anchoring deadmen/guylines. In addition to the cellular communications structure, the proposed location for an associated access road for the site was surveyed (approximately 75m long x 20m wide). Surveyors employed by ATC had staked the area to be surveyed prior to the beginning of :fieldwork. Approximately 1. 0 acre was surveyed. The purposes of the survey were 1) to identify and document all of the cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate any sites with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant cultural resources. Fieldwork was conducted May 8, 2000 by GBL archaeologists Mary E. Pirkl, Brian W. Troyer, and Larry C. Wilson. No cultural materials were discovered during survey. Cultural resource clearance is therefore recommended for construction of the proposed cellular communications tower, guylines, and access road, provided that all earth-moving activities are restricted to the currently delineated project area.
