Abstract
Description
This report outlines a design proposal for a public art installation at Lake Salinda in Salem, Indiana, developed by students in Z501 Architectural Studio. The project aims to transform underutilized public space into a vibrant community destination through creative placemaking. The design emphasizes Washington County’s cultural heritage, particularly quiltmaking and weaving, as inspiration for visual themes. Objectives include enhancing the visual appeal of public spaces, fostering community engagement, and creating collaborative pathways between local schools and the arts community. Recommendations address site selection, design criteria, budget considerations, and strategies for integrating local identity into the final installation.
This report reflects original student research and recommendations from Indiana University Z501 Architectural Studio in collaboration with the WCCF Donor Wall as part of the 2020–21 Sustaining Hoosier Communities initiative. The views expressed are those of the students and do not represent Indiana University, the Center for Rural Engagement, or the WCCF Donor Wall.
