Abstract

At the request of Vencel Appraisal Services, LLC, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University (GBL) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological survey for a temporary easement for a logging road in Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Monroe County. The project area surveyed is located approximately 0.5 miles northwest of Hindustan, Indiana. The project area is approximately 600 feet in length (183 m) and 14 feet wide (4.2 m) or 0.2 acres in size. The entire 0.2 acres were surveyed with the shovel probe method. The purposes of survey were 1) to identify and document all cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate any sites found with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. Fieldwork was conducted on March 27, 2003 by GBL archaeologist Johnie Sanders. A total of 18 shovel probes were excavated (Figure 2). All shovel probes were negative. Due to the absence of cultural materials and deflated soils, it is the opinion of the GBL-OCRM that the potential for the project area to contain archaeological resources that are eligible for either the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) or Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS) is extremely low. Thus no further archaeological investigation is recommended. Cultural resource clearance is therefore recommended for the proposed temporary easement, provided that all earth-moving activities are restricted to the currently delineated project area boundaries.
