Abstract

Includes a discussion of basic Buddhist doctrine and history in East Asia, a very bief bibliography of major studies in English, and a guide to major dictionaries of Chinese Buddhism. The focus of the chapter is on the massive collection of Buddhist texts, known as the Dazang jing, or Chinese Tripitaka, particularly the standard Japanese Taisho edition. Indexes and other tools for using the Taisho edition are discussed, and the structure of the Tripitaka is elucidated through a survey of the general content and major items in each of the first 55 volumes of the Taisho edition.
