Abstract

At the request of the Department of the Navy, Crane Division, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology ( GBL) performed a Phase IA archaeological surface reconnaissance of three laser target sites and a PM4 building site ( a total of 2.18 acres) on the grounds of the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in Perry Township, Martin County, Indiana. The purposes of the archaeological reconnaissance were to: 1) identify and document cultural resources in the proposed project areas; 2) if cultural materials were discovered, assess their potential for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS); and 3) make recommendations pertaining to the significance and future treatment of cultural resources within the project areas. Fieldwork was performed on September 16, 1988 by GBL archaeologists Wendy L. Natt, Amanda S. Roth, and Craig D. Byron. No cultural materials were found during survey of the three proposed laser target sites or the PM4 building site. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for construction of the target range and the building.
