Description

This report compiles recommendations for enhancing parks and playgrounds in Washington County communities—Salem, Campbellsburg, and Pekin—through sustainable, inclusive, and community-driven initiatives. Developed by students in the BUS-L 302 Sustainability Law & Policy course as part of the Indiana University Sustaining Hoosier Communities (IUSHC) program, the report outlines strategies such as creating ADA-compliant playgrounds, implementing community gardens, adding trail systems, and hosting engagement events. Each proposal emphasizes accessibility, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion, while addressing local challenges like limited recreational spaces and funding constraints. The report also explores grant opportunities, volunteer engagement, and programming ideas to foster long-term community vitality. This report reflects original student work and recommendations created for Washington County through the BUS-L 302 Sustainability Law & Policy course. The ideas and opinions expressed herein represent the perspectives of the students and do not necessarily reflect those of the Sustaining Hoosier Communities initiative, the IU Center for Rural Engagement, Indiana University, or Washington County officials.
