Matt Nelson is Research Scientist at IPUMS working on the US Full Count Census Data 1790-1950. He received his PhD in History from the University of Minnesota with research interests on measuring the effects of kin on demographic outcomes and improving methods to identify kin beyond the household in U.S. Census Data. In his current role, Matt is focused on processing the historical data for the research community, documenting data quality issues, and assisting users on best practices when using the full count data.
S provides free census and survey data from around the world. We receive funding from the NIH and NSF to make data more accessible to researchers by making them comparable across time and space. By reducing the barriers to accessing rich data sources, IPUMS allows researchers to leverage publicly available datasets to answer a broad array of demographic and economic questions. This talk will provide an introduction to IPUMS, review the current historical full count and linked census data available, and showcase some of the current research applications of the historical data.
