Technical Report: Survey of cyberinfrastructure needs and interests of NSF-funded principal investigators

Abstract
This document describes the methodology and results of a survey of researchers as regards their cyberinfrastructure needs and preferences. The purpose of this survey was to elicit information and requirements from researchers that were potential users of the future XD cyberinfrastructure (as defined in the solicitation TeraGrid Phase III: eXtreme Digital Resources for Science and Engineering (XD)), but whose needs would not have been identified from the many surveys of TeraGrid users.
Description
XROADS is a collaborative effort that responded to the TeraGrid Phase III: eXtreme Digital solicitation (NSF solicitation 08-571 http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08571/nsf08571.htm) under a planning grant funded by the National Science Foundation grant 0928542. XROADS partners include University of California San Diego, University of California Berkeley, University of Chicago/Argonne National Laboratory, Clemson University, University of Delaware, Elizabeth City State University, University of Florida, Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities, Indiana University, Internet2, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Purdue University, Raytheon, and Redelfs LLC. In addition to funding support from the NSF, additional support for this survey and its analysis was provided by funding from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. to Indiana University in support of the Pervasive Technology Institute.
