Abstract:
This paper is a small exploration of my own assumptions of regional identity, and
how they were modified through the simple medium of gravy. The paper also includes some research, and information gathered by talking with those interested in food from
various parts of the United States and Canada. It is a small exercise in differential
identity, and it is a reinforcement of some of the very basic ideas about food ways and identity which have been commented upon by numerous authors (cf. Brown & Mussell 1984, Shortridge & Shortridge 1998).
