Abstract
At the request of Mr. Daniel Webster of Warsaw, Kentucky, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology-Indiana University (GBL) performed phase IC subsurface archaeological investigations of approximately 0.57 acres of Ohio River floodplain near the town of Florence in southeastern Switzerland County, Indiana. The investigations were in response to compliance requirements of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District (COE) and the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DHPA). The goals of the proposed investigations were to 1) identify and document all cultural resources in the project area; 2) make recommendations concerning whether or not the deposits are eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS); and 3) make recommendations for further archaeological study of sites recommended to be significant or potentially significant. Fieldwork was conducted during September and October, 1998 by GBL archaeologists, Wendy L. Natt, Amanda S. Roth, Craig D. Byron, Mary E. Pirkl, Charles E. Bair, and Patrick K. O'Brien. The GBL coordinated the project with Jan Marie Hemburger at the COE and with Jim Mohow at DHP A. Phase IC subsurface survey (auger excavation) resulted in the discovery of one site, 12 Sw 356, which contains both prehistoric and historic components. This site is represented by a very light distribution of lithic artifacts and fragments of historic debris found in auger probes excavated to a maximum depth of 1.57 m below surface. No diagnostic artifacts (prehistoric or historic) were found at the site. These findings indicate that 12 Sw 356 does not contain significant, buried cultural remains and therefore has little potential value for further research. Thus, the site fails to satisfy even the broadest criterion (d) for NRHP eligibility. No further archaeological investigations are recommended for 12 Sw 356, and cultural resource clearance is recommended for the proposed project area.
