Item Beyond Boundaries: Indiana University High Performance Computing and Communications(1997) Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIOItem Indiana University: The Strategic Directions Charter(1996-01) Office of the PresidentItem The International Grid (iGrid): Empowering Global Research Community Networking Using High Performance International Internet Services(1998) Brown, Maxine; Defanti, Thomas A.; McRobbie, Michael A.; Verlo, Alan; Plepys, Dana; McMullen, Donald F.; Adams, Karen; Leigh, Jason; Johnson, Andrew E.; Foster, Ian; Kesselman, Carl; Schmidt, Andrew; Goldstein, Steven N.The Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Indiana University collaborated on a major research demonstration at the IEEE/ACM Supercomputing '98 (SC'98) conference in Orlando, Florida, November 7-13, 1998, to showcase the evolution and importance of global research community networking. Collaborators worked together to solve complex computational problems using advanced high-speed networks to access geographically-distributed computing, storage, and display resources. It is the collection of computing and communication resources that we refer to as the International Grid (iGrid). This paper presents an overview of the grid testbed, some of the underlying technologies used to enable distributed computing and collaborative problem solving, and descriptions of the applications. It concludes with recommendations for the future of global research community networking, based on the experiences of iGrid participants from the USA, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Singapore, and Taiwan.Item Datasets Published by the IU Pervasive Technology Institute 1999-2019(2020-08-26) Stewart, Craig A.; Plale, Beth; Fischer, JeremyItem 2020 External Review of the Pervasive Technology Institute(2020-05-31) Stewart, Craig A.; Slavin, Shawn; Ping, RobertItem Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute preproposal and proposal management, documentation, and templates(2020-06) Stewart, Craig A.; Miller, Therese; Snapp-Childs, Winona; Jankowski, Harmony; Husk, MalindaItem Form for 2020 survey on assessment of higher education approacher to return on investment in cyberinfrastructure(2020) Sill, Alan; Chalker, Alan; Hillegas, Curtis; Sharon, Broude GevaItem Decommissioning a Large Data Archive: Lessons Learned from Cleaning out the Attic(2019-08) Moore, Richard L.; Minor, David; Sivagnanam, Subhashini; Tatineni, Mahidar; Young, William S.This paper describes key elements of the decommissioning of a large tape-based data archive that the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) operated for its users from the center’s inception in 1985 until ~2010. This 25-year period covered many generations of supercomputers and correspondingly many generations of tape and storage technologies, with Moore’s-law growth in supercomputing power and associated storage capacity/bandwidth. Over the archive’s last decade, data volume grew exponentially with a doubling period of ~16 months to a maximum size of ~10 PB. In ~2010, the National Science Foundation terminated funding for SDSC’s tape archive and SDSC proceeded with decommissioning the archive over a ~2-year period. This paper briefly describes the principles and process by which we decommissioned this large archive, key issues that arose during this process, and implications for institutions that operate data archival systems and suggestions for operating archival systems in the FAIR data environment.Item The Pervasive Technology Institute at 20: Two decades of success and counting(2019-01) Stewart, Craig A.; Welch, Von; Doak, Thomas G.; Miller, Therese; Plale, Beth; Pierce, Marlon; Hancock, David Y.; Henschel, Robert; Walsh, John A.; Link, Matthew R.; Snapp-Childs, Winona; Jankowski, HarmonyItem Cyberinfrastructure, Cloud Computing, Science Gateways, Visualization, and Cyberinfrastructure Ease of Use(IGI Global, 2017-07-01) Stewart, Craig A.; Knepper, Richard; Link, Matthew R.; Pierce, Marlon; Wernert, Eric; Wilkins-Diehr, NancyComputers accelerate our ability to achieve scientific breakthroughs. As technology evolves and new research needs come to light, the role for cyberinfrastructure as “knowledge” infrastructure continues to expand. In essence, cyberinfra- structure can be thought of as the integration of supercomputers, data resources, visualization, and people that extends the impact and utility of information technology. This article defines and discusses cyberinfrastructure and the related topics of science gateways and campus bridging, identifies future challenges in cyberinfrastructure, and discusses challenges and opportunities related to the evolution of cyberinfrastructure and cloud computing.Item Discipline Categories (for Cyberinfrastructure) at Indiana University(2013-06-28) Stewart, Craig A.Item Use of IU parallel computing resources and high performance file systems - July 2013 to Dec 2014(2015-02) Link, Matthew R.; Simms, Stephen C.; Stewart, Craig A.; Henschel, Robert; Fulton, BenjaminThis report details use of IU's parallel computing resources and high performance file systems from July 2013 through December 2014.Item Ice Sheet Sensing - Information Technology support and development(2012-12-21) Wang, JunThis report provides a summary of the PolarGrid geospatial support activities carried out by Jun Wang from July 2010 to June 2012 while working in the Digital Science Center of the Pervasive Technology Institute and later in the Science Gateway Group of Research Technology.Item Globus Online Security Review(2012-02-08) Welch, VonThis document represents a cybersecurity risk assessment of the Globus Online File Transfer service and associated Website service.
