Item The 21st century early clarinet method: a historical clarinet treatise for modern clarinetists(Indiana University, 2018-12-04) Northover, Keith; Klug, HowardAs historical performance becomes more significant in concert life, the quest for an organized instruction on historical instruments including clarinets becomes ever more necessary. The aim of this document is to create an early clarinet method book for the contemporary clarinetist. It uses Jean Xavier Lefèvre’s Méthode de Clarinette as a guide and resource for developing one’s musicianship and technique on historical instruments and performance practices. The preliminary chapters discuss a basic introduction to the history of the clarinet, basic elements and practices that need to be addressed or altered for playing historical instruments, and any requisite informed performance practices to be learned. A new version of Lefèvre’s twelve sonatas are then presented with a self-masterclass guide for each to aid learning and performing on a five-key clarinet. Finally, the document offers a collection of further sources for further exploration of early music , including additional repertoire, books, articles, and audio and visual resources. This new method book attempts to be a crucial aid for any young clarinetist wishing to enter the historical field and help redefine the musical performing framework of standard classical repertory in gaining new insight into the perspectives of an eighteenth or nineteenth century performer or listener.Item 21st-century brass pedagogy : modern scientific discoveries and their implications on current brass pedagogy(Indiana University, 2017-06-24) Sulliman, Jason M.Since the beginning of brass instruments, much of the information utilized to develop a pedagogical framework for teaching and playing these instruments was developed through personal experience, trial and error, and anecdotal teaching through a largely apprenticeship system. Pedagogical ideas were developed from the vantage point of current information viewed through the lens of conventional thought of the time. Several emerging fields of scientific research have contributed to new information that contradicts what was previously viewed as pedagogically stable ideology. This paper summarizes a history of conventional thought towards human learning and movement, provides a brief description of new and emerging fields of scientific inquiry that have been created/enhanced by technological advancements in measurement equipment, and offers several examples of new ways to apply current scientific beliefs towards conventional brass pedagogy in the form of exercises that c an replace traditional pedagogical exercises based on outdated information.Item 5 Views Re/Dux(2016-10-15) Rowe, Will, 1992-Item A CONDUCTOR'S GUIDE TO INTERPRETING BEETHOVEN'S NINTH SYMPHONY(Indiana University, 2024-04-19) Ho, Pak Lok AlvinItem A CONDUCTOR’S ANALYSIS OF GABRIEL JACKSON’S “THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST”(Indiana University, 2024-05-01) Abernathy, LawrenceItem A River of Blossoms(Indiana University, 2024-05-03) Hsiao, YaoItem A STUDY OF ADRIEN-FRANÇOIS SERVAIS’ PEDAGOGICAL WORKS AND STYLISTIC TRAITS: TOWARD AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BELGIAN CELLO SCHOOL(Indiana University, 2024-05-01) Flynn, KevinPart One deals with Servais’ biography and impact on the Belgian School of Cello playing: Chapter One presents a summary of Servais’ extant biographical materials with emphasis on Peter Francois’ new critical biography; Chapter Two provides a timeline of professors at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels from its inception until 1920 including each professor’s contributions to the Belgian Cello School. Part Two breaks down Servais’ Etudes and Caprices with descriptive analyses and discussions of relevant technical concepts/challenges; the Etudes are studied in Chapter Three for their applications in Servais’ repertoire and the standard cello repertoire, and the Caprices are studied in Chapter Four as standalone concert works and as fulfillment of Belgian pedagogical priorities. The appendices include presently-unavailable pedagogical works that are critical to a comprehensive study of the Belgian School of cello pedagogy: those of Servais’ teacher Nicolas Platel and Servais’ colleague at the Conservatory Constant-Adolphe Warot. While outside the scope of this present paper, these works are included to spark further discussion and study of this body of work.Item A STUDY OF BÉLA BARTÓK’S MIKROKOSMOS: A TIMELESS AND TRANSCENDENT PIANO AND MUSIC CURICULA FOR CHILDREN(Indiana University, 2024-04-01) Yu, ChaojengItem Aaqil's Real Scoring Suite(Indiana University, 2023-05-09) Abdullah, AaqilItem Aaron Copland's Music for the theatre: a transcription for wind band(2014-07-03) Richardson, BrettAaron Copland’s Music for the Theatre: A Transcription for Wind Band Aaron Copland (1900-1990) can be considered one of the most significant musicians of the twentieth century, as his well-documented contributions as a composer, conductor, and author, are internationally celebrated. While some of his most well-known works were crafted during the late 1930s and 1940s (e.g., El salón México, Quiet City, Fanfare for the Common Man, Lincoln Portrait, Appalachian Spring), it is from an earlier, more developmental period in Copland’s life in which the inspiration for a new transcription for wind band can be found: his Music for the Theatre: Suite in Five Parts for Small Orchestra (1925). Copland’s Music for the Theatre was composed for a small orchestra consisting of woodwinds, brass, percussion, and reduced string section. Composed in five contrasting movements, the work displays a strong American sensibility due to Copland’s use of jazz harmonies, popular sounding themes, and unique choices in orchestration. Consequently, because of the composer’s frequent reliance upon woodwind, brass, and percussion timbres in the original orchestral version, Music for the Theatre possesses great potential as a transcription for wind band. Two main objectives exist within this project: to make available a high-quality wind transcription of a substantial orchestral work and to provide historical and formal information relating to the piece. More specifically, the final project will consist of a transcription of Music for the Theatre for wind band, which will include a transposed score with program notes and a set of transposed parts. Secondly, a prose document complete with historical information, formal and theoretical considerations, and correspondence pertaining to the transcription process will be submitted. viii While many transcriptions of Aaron Copland’s music exist, the earliest known work by the composer transcribed for wind band is El salón México (1935). By completing this transcription, I hope to contribute to the wind band repertoire a piece from Copland’s earlier, more formative compositional style and promote interest in a substantial work by one of America’s most important composers.Item The acoustical foundations of bel canto(2016-12-07) Uthup, CheruvathurIn the area of voice instruction, tradition and science are often viewed as being on opposite ends of the spectrum. Pitting science and tradition against each other in a mutually exclusive fashion frequently results in unnecessary confusion, antagonism, and misunderstandings among both students and teachers of singing. However, the traditional teachings of bel canto are not at odds with modern science. In fact, much of the traditional precepts have support in the modern scientific literature. Thus, the purpose of this project is to bring to light the underlying scientific principles present within the traditional teachings of bel canto.Item Afterimages: for orchestraSink, Phillip, 1982-Item Agency, social structure, and the effectiveness of organist-choirmasters: what's the relationship?(Indiana University, 2019-10-02) Gabriel, Priscilla W., 1988-Item All you who sleep tonight by Jonathan Dove: a theoretical and performance guide(Indiana University, 2020-04-30) Jameson, CourtneyItem Alta(2012-05-04) Ko, Tonia, 1988-Item The American Pedagogy of Byzantine Chant(Indiana University, 2023-12-14) Taluzek, EleniItem American Symphonic Journeys(Indiana University, 2023-12-14) Yee-Paulson, BenjaminItem ANALYSIS OF J.
