Asian and Pacific Region Authorship Characteristics in Leading Library and Information Science Journals
(Serials Review, 2008) Park, Taemin Kim
Authorship characteristics from the Asian and Pacific region in the top twenty journals in library and information science are studied. Data was collected searching the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science databases. Major findings of this study are: there are a total of 1,317 articles for the period 1967 to 2005; the most productive countries are, in rank order, Australia, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines; and 77.6 percent of authors in the top twenty library and information science journals contributed a single article. Among the library science journals about 50 percent were written by multiple authors, while 73.1 percent of articles in the information science journals were written collaboratively. The Integration of Electronic Resources into Cataloging Instruction in the LIS Curriculum
(The Serials Librarian, 2002) Park, Taemin Kim
Basic, advanced, and related cataloging courses were examined to demonstrate the extent of integration of electronic Web resources into cataloging instruction in LIS programs in the U.S. Forty-five library school programs are analyzed to determine the extent of integration of Web resources, the major and sub-topics covered in full courses in cataloging Web resources, the methods of teaching, and the extent of integration of Web tools and standards into cataloging instruction. Seven full courses devoted to the instruction of cataloging electronic resources were identified. An early stage of cataloging instruction in electronic resources and some of the challenges in teaching are presented.

The Nature and Characteristics of Bibliographic Relationships in RDA Cataloging Records in OCLC at the Beginning of RDA Implementation
(Cataloging & Classification Quarterly, 2017) Park, Taemin Kim; Morrison, Andrea M.
This research examines the characteristics and types of bibliographic relationships in Resource Description and Access (RDA) book cataloging records produced in OCLC after RDA implementation. Data was sampled (n = 1,550), coded, and analyzed for work-to-work, expression-to-expression, and manifestation-to-manifestation relationships. Results show work-to-work bibliographic relationships are most frequently recorded in both PCC records (57.4%) and non-PCC (59.5%); expression-to-expression are recorded the least in PCC (8.3%) and non-PCC (15.8%); and manifestation-to-manifestation relationships fall between with PCC (34.4%) and non-PCC (24.7%). This study also investigates the MARC fields used to record relationships and common characteristics in cataloging records with bibliographic relationships.

The Nature of Relevance in Information Retrieval: An Empirical Study
(The Library Quarterly, 1993-07) Park, Taemin Kim
Experimental research in information retrieval (IR) depends on the idea of relevance. Because of its key role in IR, recent questions about relevance have raised issues of methodological concern and have shaken the philosophical foundations of IR theory development. Despite an existing set of theoretical definitions of this concept, our understanding of relevance from users' perspectives is still limited. Using naturalistic inquiry methodology, this article reports an empirical study of user-based relevance interpretations. A model is presented that reflects the nature of the thought processes of users who are evaluating bibliographic citations produced by a document retrieval system. Three major categories of variables affecting relevance assessments-internal context, external context, and problem context-are identified and described. Users' relevance assessments involve multiple layers of interpretations that are derived from individuals' experiences, perceptions, and private knowledge related to the particular information problems at hand.

Wikipedia Research in Scholarly Publications in Asia and the Pacific Region
(Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Library and Information Education and Practice 2015, 2015) Park, Taemin Kim
The visibility of Wikipedia research in scholarly publications in the Asia and the Pacific region was studied utilizing the Scopus database. Twelve countries (Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam (in the region were examined: the most productive countries, the most productive authors, the most productive affiliated institutions, the publications most frequently reporting Wikipedia research, the most active academic fields, and the preferred publishing venues were identified. The impact of Wikipedia research was examined by counting the number of citations received. The most frequently citing authors, the most frequently citing affiliated institutions, countries and academic disciplines were identified. The extent of collaboration in Wikipedia research in the region and across the globe was also examined and reported. Scholarly communications regarding Wikipedia research in the region appear to be active after 2009 and the collaboration rate is high.
