Item Beyond Searches: How Discovery Data Can Enhance Library Services(Amigos Library Services, 2014-11) Cohen, Rachael; Pusnik, Angie Thorpe; Shan, FengIn 2011, the Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University Kokomo Libraries launched EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), with Indiana University South Bend following soon after in 2013. EDS allows users to search large portions of their library collections, including the library catalog and both EBSCO and non-EBSCO databases, from a single search box. But what does actual user behavior look like? In this session, librarians from three separate IU campuses will present usage and analytics data that reveal how far both the libraries and their users have come since implementing EDS. Speakers will share user behavior data that reveals the reception of EDS at each campus, then offer suggestions for data-informed ways in which librarians can enhance library services so that users are able to find and access the content that best meets their needs.Item Comparing Transaction Logs to ILL - Raw Data(2015-01-10) Cohen, Rachael; Michaels, SherriItem Discovering user behavior: Applying usage statistics to shape frontline services(Taylor & Francis Group, 2015) Cohen, Rachael; Thorpe, AngieThis investigation sought to develop a broad view of discovery service user behavior by analyzing vendor-provided and Google Analytics usage data from discovery service implementations at two Indiana University campuses. The results of this analysis demonstrate how usage data can communicate both intermediary and end results of user interactions within discovery services. The findings reveal user behavior trends, which may be used to develop strategies to improve information literacy instruction techniques, as well as discovery service interface enhancements.Item Discovering User Behavior: Applying Usage Statistics to Shape Frontline Services(OhioLink Consortium’s User Services Committee, 2016-02) Cohen, Rachael; Pusnik, AngieThis investigation sought to develop a broad view of discovery service user behavior by analyzing vendor-provided and Google Analytics usage data from discovery service implementations at two Indiana University campuses. The results of this analysis demonstrate how usage data can communicate both intermediary and end results of user interactions within discovery services. The findings reveal user behavior trends, which may be used to develop strategies to improve information literacy instruction techniques, as well as discovery service interface enhancements.Item Does (No) Discovery Lead to (ILL) Delivery? Comparing Transaction Logs to ILL requests to Determine the Persistence of Library Patrons(Journal of Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery & Electronic Reserve, 2019) Cohen, Rachael; Michaels, SherriThis study looks at known-item searches within a university catalog that come up with a “no results” response to see whether patrons will then place an ILL request for that material and how persistent a user might be in order to obtain something that they want. Catalog search transaction logs were compared against interlibrary loan (ILL) requests placed during the same time frame. Overall, the rate of persistence, or the frequency with which ILL requests were placed when no results were found in the catalog is very low.Item Evolution of a Discovery Service: Development from functional and technical perspectives(LITA Forum 2016, 2016-11) Cohen, Rachael; Pillans, JohnImplementing a single discovery layer to serve the diverse needs of many campuses, libraries and users presents an opportunity to take on unique challenges. Interested in open source software, Blacklight, SOLR, fast updates with property files, real-time updates, browse, ArangoDB, and other local customizations? In this multi-perspective talk, we’ll outline our past, current, and future efforts to create a complete and excellent patron experience for our shared catalog discovery interface.Item Going Straight to the Source: What Users Really Think of Our Catalog(Indiana University Bloomington Libraries In-House Institute, 2010-05-11) Cohen, RachaelDo you ever wonder what students really think about IUCAT? Or the libraries in general? Through traditional user studies and focus groups, I set out to discover these students' attitudes, preferences, and their overall user experience with the library catalog. After summarizing the results of these studies, this presentation will outline current and upcoming changes/enhancements to IUCAT as a result of what these users have saidItem Going Straight to the Source: What Users Really Think of Our Catalog - Poster(LITA Forum, 2015-11) Cohen, RachaelYou know students use your catalog, or you hope they do. But do you know what they really think about it? How do you find out what users are thinking if they never come to the library? Where do you find the students who don’t find you? One librarian found answers by going straight to the source, working with residence halls staff to conduct undergraduate focus groups as well as traditional user testing. This poster will present what we discovered about these students' attitudes, preferences, and their overall user experience with the library catalog and the library in general.Item IU Libraries Discovery Layer Advisory Group Progress Report(2018-06-25) Baich, Tina; Bennett, Terri; Cohen, Rachael; Kwong, Vincci; Lent, Randy; Greene McDonald, Courtney; McFadden, Sue; Moore, Kate; Peters, Chuck; Pusnik, Angie; Seykowski, Ed; Whittaker, Thomas; Dill, Emily; Skekloff, SueItem IU Libraries Discovery Layer Implementation Task Force Progress Report and Notes & Recommendations for Future(2014-06-01) McDonald, Courtney Greene; Baich, Tina; Charbonneau, Gary; Cohen, Rachael; Lent, Randy; Long, Chris Evin; McFadden, Sue; Skekloff, SusanIn May 2013, the primary public interface for IUCAT transitioned to a new discovery layer interface, powered by the open source web application Blacklight. This document reports on progress and makes recommendations for enabling ongoing system-wide input into the development of the catalog discovery interface through the completion of the upcoming OLE migration project. Appendices include groups’ charges & memberships, and an annotated version of the original selection rubric notating status of product features. This report was prepared for the IU Council of Head Librarians.Item Library Analytics: Shaping the Future — Applying Data Analysis: Demonstrate Value, Shape Services, and Broaden Information Literacy(Against the Grain, 2018-02) Cohen, Rachael; Pusnik, AngieItem RX for Discovery(Sage, 2015-06-28) Cohen, Rachael; Blakiston, RebeccaLibraries and publishers are paying increasing attention to the information experiences of today’s emerging scholars – but what is the underlying value in understanding the researcher experience? What have we learned about how readers discover the content we disseminate? What impacts do these lessons have on the resources and services we provide? Should we redesign websites after just one round of user testing? What does user-centered decision making mean for how we enable discoverability of academic content? This in-booth event will feature librarians who have conducted researcher experience studies and made changes to their libraries based on their findings.
