Keynote presentation at the Third International Workshop on Data Intensive Distributed Computing (DIDC'10) held in conjunction with HPDC'10, Chicago IL.
IU was among the many organizations that developed the phrase “data deluge” to describe the prodigious capabilities of digital instruments to produce data. A deluge calls to mind an extremely heavy rain, or maybe being drenched by a large wave. Unfortunately the situation we have is worse than that. The new capabilities of next-generation sequencing machines, digital video, and the capability of scientists to put high-output devices in remote locations makes the data issue far more challenging that it has ever been. This talk focuses on two general areas of handling data issues: wide area filesystems and movement of data across long distances; and the challenges of data management when data production rates simply exceed the capabilities of the network connecting source to analysis facilities. Examples will be drawn from use of the IU Data Capacitor, now the most widely used globally-accessible file system in the history of the TeraGrid; and field studies with data sources ranging from the Antarctic ice cap to African villages to telescopes on remote mountains. Some successes and many emerging challenges will be discussed.

Too many people, too few people; inspiring young people; examples of interesting educational activities (roughly scaling up by participant count); new opportunities for cyberinfrastructure at the campus, national, and international levels (campus bridging).

Presented at the Hubbub 2012 Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, September 24, 2012.
Several components developed as part of the cceHUB database project (namely com_dataview and com_form) were used to PROTOTYPE a new component supporting basic data exploration functions: the creation and display of frequency charts/tables, cross-tabulations, simple regressions, and correlation matrices.
These functions access individual tables already uploaded to databases accessible from the Hub; there is no provision at this time for uploading data that can then be explored, although tools for doing so have also been built using com_form, and could in principle serve that function.
This presentation aims to identify interest among conference attendees to justify further development of the PROTOTYPE, since this software is not ready for deployment at this time.

Stewart, C.A., and M. Krefeldt. 2018. Your Good Health is a Workforce Issue. Presentation slides for long form of talk given at PEARC ’18: Practice and Experience in Advanced Research Computing, July 22–26, 2018, Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

The high performance computing (HPC), cyberinfrastructure, and research and academic information technology communities are small - too small to fulfill current needs for such professionals in the US. Members of this community are also often under a lot of stress, and with that can come health problems. The senior author was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer in early 2017. In this paper, we share what we have learned about health management in general and dealing with cancer in particular, focusing on lessons that are portable to other members of the HPC, cyberinfrastructure, and research and academic information technology communities. We also make recommendations to the National Science Foundation regarding changes the NSF could make to reduce some of the stress this community feels on a day-in, day-out basis.
The key point of this report is to provide information to members of the cyberinfrastructure community that they might not already have - and might not receive from their primary care physicians - that will help them live longer and healthier lives. While our own experiences are based on one of the author’s diagnosis of cancer, the information presented here should be of general value to all in terms of strategies for reducing and detecting long-term health risks. Our hope is that this information will help you be as healthy as possible until you reach retirement age and then healthy during a well-deserved and long period of retirement!
