Abstract

Increased interest in computers and folklore has sparked a revival of interest in creating computer programs to generate stories. This movement has created a renewed interest in Vladímir Propp’s Morphology of the Folktale. This article is a retrospect on an early computer model of Propp’s morphology. The computer program was written in PL/1, and it integrated ideas from transformational-generative grammar in its applications. Specific challenges in writing the program point to wider implications for revitalizing and reintegrating ideas from earlier structuralist approaches into contemporary folklore research.
