Abstract

College mascots encourage spirited enthusiasm for athletics and unite the campus community through a common symbol (Thelin, 2004). Currently, Indiana University lacks a mascot; however, that was not always the case. Several mascot designs emerged for the
university, but none had lasting success. Therefore, Indiana University has embraced the mythical “Hoosier” for their identity. This historical overview of Indiana University’s various mascots provides a glimpse of the importance of symbols and identities for the campus.
